Local 21 (Atlanta, Ga.) records, 1958-1979.

The collection consists of the records of Local 21 (Atlanta, Ga.) of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) and its predecessor, the Office Employees International Union, from 1958-1979. Most of the correspondence (1968-1976) is from Local President Ronna Jones and the OPEIU International Union, primarily President Howard Coughlin and Secretary Treasurer William A. Lowe. The financial records (1963-1979) include reports, statements, dues and membership cards, as well as, OPEIU financial reports. The minutes include those of Local 21 (1972-1975) and the OPEIU Executive Board (1967-1976). The grievances (1966-1979) all concern union employers and include a protracted grievance against the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union. The organizing files (1958-1979) document mostly unsuccessful attempts at organizing clerical workers in private businesses, public transportation, and Grady Memorial Hospital.

The Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, was constructed and opened in 1913. It was named for its builder, William F. Winecoff. On December 7, 1946 the hotel caught fire with 300 registered guests inside. The first call to the fire department was made at three forty-two in the morning and at six thirty in the morning firefighters were still putting out the flames.
